Clunk Click Every Trip....! Remember the old mantra?
Did you know only half of all truck drivers wear their safety belt? This is according to the most recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report entitled ‘Global Status Report on Road Safety 2013’. The chances of surviving a serious road accident are doubled if the driver or passenger uses a safety belt. Common excuses for not wearing one include “it’s time consuming to keep putting it on” or “it restricts my movement”. The report emphasizes increased belt usage as one of the most crucial issues for improving traffic safety. Today there is legislation requiring safety belt usage in 111 countries the world over and, as of 2006, compulsory belt use has been required in the EU for both cars and trucks.
Hold on tight……3 points of contact
Following on from seat belts, remember to use 3 points of contact when exiting and entering your vehicle. Move or adjust the seat back to give you more leg room to manoeuvre safely. Make sure your hands are free to gain a full grip. Use the trailer steps to get in and out of the trailer; they are not ideal and if another option is provided like mobile steps or platform, then use them!
Alcohol Zero Tolerance
It’s important to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all personnel and visitors to Tata sites.
Please remember we take a Zero Tolerance approach to alcohol and drugs. Any driver that is suspected of drinking i.e. smelling of alcohol or suspicious behaviour, may be “due cause tested” and if they prove to be over the legal limit of 35micrograms in 100ml of breath will be reported to the Police. Drivers that test positive but are under 35micrograms will be turned away for 24 hours without loading.
PPE and Chin Straps
We have seen an increase of drivers arriving at Tata sites with the incorrect chin straps, or no chin strap at all. Chin straps are a mandatory part of the equipment for loading at Tata sites and play a vital part in keeping the wearer safe, ensuring hard hats stay on during a fall. A Penny for Them....!
All feedback is good and in some cases can help to resolve issues or challenges that your drivers come across in the course of their day at all sites. During a recent driver training session a potentially hazardous working at height and contamination situation at a customer site was highlighted to us. We investigated, processes were put in place and mobile steps were installed which has resolved all the issues. Let us know your driver experiences on site, good and bad.
