Importance of Training
The attached article from the HSE highlights the importance and the consequences of insufficient training and what can happen. The haulage contractor in the article was sentenced for safety failings after a driver suffered serious injuries when he was catapulted from a powered access platform as he was unloading it from a heavy goods vehicle. Quotation – “A key part to managing risks for firms is to make sure drivers are competent before they leave the gates of their depot”

CPC Training
Carrying on with the theme of training, CPC training for all UK drivers should have been completed in September 2014. However, our 1 day course is still available to book for this year to enable our hauliers to spread the cost of training over the next 5 years.
Reporting Defects
Accompanying this Newsletter is a bulletin concerning an injury to a driver from a trailer defect. The previous driver did not report the defect. This incident highlights how drivers need to look out for each other and stop and think about what could cause harm not only to themselves but to their colleagues also.
Pedestrian Walkways
Another relevant article for our hauliers and customers is attached below regarding an incident at a Haulage firm where an employee was forced to walk out on to the road due to the Pedestrian walkway being blocked. He was consequently knocked down by a lorry and suffered multiple injuries. This incident could easily have been avoided by use of an alternative route and clearer demarcation of vehicle and pedestrian routes.
